The Turnbull Tartans |

In 1979, the late John Turnbull from Hawick,
Scotland, originated the idea for a Turnbull tartan. The result was three tartans
being developed based on a combination of the Bruce and Douglas tartans. Two
other Turnbull tartans have been designed for private use only and are shown
here for the sake of interest. The data presented is taken from the World Tartans Register (WTR) and Scottish Tartans Authority (ITI) as well as my own data collections. The Syndex is based upon a colour recording scheme used by the now defunct Scottish Tartans Society. |

An unusual dress tartan having no white. This has the same geometry as a Douglas tartan and in their book Tartans, William H.Johnston & Philip D.Smith jr name it Douglas of Roxburgh. |

The sett has combined elements from the Douglas and the Bruce tartans, both clans having had much to do with the history of Turnbulls. It is considered a variant of the hunting tartan and is no longer woven. This tartan has never been woven for general use and, except for a registration sample, is only existent in name only. |
